Keanu Reeves looks unkempt with long straggly hair and a thick beard as he smokes while sitting barefoot on a street corner

He’s one of Hollywood’s most instantly recognisable stars, but one could be forgiven for overlooking Keanu Reeves as he idled outside a Brooklyn studio on Thursday afternoon.

The celebrated actor, 53, looked vastly different beneath a thick mane of shoulder-length hair and a grizzled beard during early preparations for the third instalment in his hugely popular John Wick franchise.

Keanu, whose titular character will go on the run in the forthcoming film, shielded himself beneath a baseball cap as he took a smoke break on a street corner after training for the highly physical role with his stunt-team.

Quite a difference: He’s one of Hollywood’s most instantly recognisable stars, but one could be forgiven for overlooking Keanu Reeves as he idled outside a Brooklyn studio on Thursday afternoon

Sitting in his bare feet, the actor – best known for past roles in the Bill and Ted and Matrix film franchises – looked vastly different as he puffed on a cigarette.

Keanu was joined by a mixture of stunt and production assistants, and he relaxed as they unloaded crash mats and a motorcycle from the back of a nearby van.

The actor will return as former hitman Wick when his new film goes on general release in 2019.

But fans will get an early opportunity to see the character in action in The Continental, a small-screen spin-off of the successful franchise set to air on US network Starz.

‘You can expect to see him at some point of the series,’ Starz programming head Carmi Zlotnik announced at the TCA winter press tour, Deadline report.

Keanu will also executive produce the show centered around the Continental Hotel, the John Wick universe’s refuge for Los Angeles’ criminal underworld.

Walkies: A passing dog sniffed at the actor as he took the weight off his feet during a break on Thursday

Manual labour: An assistant shouldered a batch of mats as they emptied the van on Thursday

The first two John Wick films were both critically-acclaimed and amassed a combined $260 million at the box office worldwide, as well as spawning a virtual reality mobile game.

Reeves will also reprise his small-screen role as deceased stuntman Tex Johnson in the second season of Swedish Dicks, premiering later this year on Lionsgate TV.

Elsewhere the actor is set to feature in forthcoming science-fiction drama Replicas and crime thriller Siberia. Both will be released in 2018.
